District Directors Newsletter from Ed & Barbara Mushlit

GWRRA MAINE DISTRICT APRIL 2010  NEWSLETTER

It’s been a while since I have written to you all. Barb and I have been enjoying our winter stay here in Florida despite the harsh  Florida winter in January, February and some of March. It didn’t actually seem that bad for a northerner with thick skin.

It has been a tumultuous time for the District and the Chapters with all of the changes that came about from National.  Leadership has been strained and members have been left wondering just what would become of the organization in general. Well, here is what we know thus far.

The District Directors position will change effective during the upcoming N.E. Convention in Gorham this July.  Allen and Claudette Cyr will reassume the position at that time. We are very happy with the change and glad that the Cyr’s will once again be at the helm. Too much has happened and relationships have been scarred enough that Barb and I didn’t feel that we could continue in an effective manner. You all deserve better leadership and Allen and Claudette have proven to be very capable.

We have enjoyed the ride, made many good friends along the way and we will continue to enjoy those relationships and cultivate new ones in the future. We will continue to support the region, district and chapters in any way we can as Just Members again.

The future of GWRRA in Maine depends on you as members and participants in the activities and programs that it offers. You can bring FUN back to the organization however it requires a little effort and volunteerism from everyone, not just a few. I hope that you all support the Cyr’s and the Chapter Directors in their future endeavors.

 Our sincere thanks to everybody,

 Ed & Barbara Mushlit

GWRRA MAINE DISTRICT  JANUARY 2010 NEWSLETTER

Happy New Year everybody!  As 2010 starts off with plenty of snow and cold weather we are hunkered down in a nice warm house with the wood stove burning steady.  These are good weekends to catch up on some end of the year chores like putting the Christmas decorations away and writing another newsletter.

As we look back on 2009, it was a year that brought highs and lows. We began the riding season with cold wet weather that dampened a lot of potential riding and planned trips. Personally we had to deal with Barb’s breast cancer and the long and arduous treatments that are still ongoing. The good news is that as of today she has 11 more radiations and we will soon leave for the sunny south to rejuvenate. Looking forward to getting back on the Wing when we arrive and visiting with some old friends while there.  Upon returning in the spring I hope and pray that the weather isn’t a repeat of last year and most importantly that we all are healthy.

We are still working on preparations for the 2010 and 2011 New England Rally’s.   It will be nice having them both nearby so that everyone within our district will hopefully be able to attend.  The upcoming rally in July is posted on the website for registrations and reservation info.

As we have emphasized before, membership enhancement is on the front burner for everyone. Whatever it takes to increase and retain members is very important.

Enjoy the remainder of winter and we will see you all sometime again in May. I can always be reached via e-mail, snail mail and cell phone, (207) 441-4451 if needed while we are away.

GWRRA MAINE DISTRICT NEWSLETTER

DECEMBER 2009

Another year is nearly gone and we are getting prepared to greet 2010.  We are honored and proud to announce a new addition to the district staff. Bob and Sheila Chevalier have become our Assistant District Directors. They are currently Chapter "A" Directors  and will carry on with both positions for a while. Both have done an excellent job in reviving a chapter that nearly closed just a little more than a year ago. Congratulations to you both for your accomplishments thus far. We also want to announce a new district treasurer for 2010.  Ruth Hall will be stepping in as treasurer beginning in January. Ruth is in Chapter A along with her husband Russ. She is an attorney and a pretty good murder mystery player as well. Ruth will replace Nancy King who has done a super job this past year. Nancy will now have more time to devote to her family and her other duties as Chapter C webmaster . Thankyou for your service Nancy. Without volunteers our organizational wheels do not turn.

A District Staff meeting was conducted on November 14th with all the chapter directors except Jim & Linda Cyr of Chapter V who were unable to attend. We discussed year end administrative duties and requirements and ways that we could serve the membership better. Ideas regarding rally's, rides, group activities and fundraising were discussed at length. The staff came up with some very good ideas and events  that will be shared with you all at future chapter meetings this winter. Another topic discussed was the recent mandate from region which directs us to provide the following district key staff positions by 2010:

1.            District LTD (Leadership trainer)Trainer.

2.            District Ride Educator.  (we have Mark Bennett for this one)

3.            District MED Coordinator. (membership enhancement)

4.            District Couple of the Year Coordinator.

5.            District Chapter of the Year Coordinator

These 4 positions are open for anyone who is interested and need to be filled asap. Further explanation of the duties is available on the GWRRA.org website or you can call me to discuss the details.

The positions are necessary to provide the full benefits of GWRRA membership that everyone is entitled to.  If these positions are not filled very soon our district is at risk of being merged with the other five New England states as one district under a single leadership as proposed by Lorraine Knight. The merger proposal is something that all 6 district directors are very much against and we all have voiced our concerns.

The 2011 New England Districts Rally has been revised to be held in Maine instead of Connecticut. We hope to have more info available after the new year. Next summers rally will still be held at Gorham, N.H.  Rally registration and  information is available on our district website www.gwrra-maine org.

The chapter holiday parties are coming up and I wish that we could attend each every one however we cannot be everywhere at once.  Please drive safely and have fun. For all you snow birds in Florida, we plan to be there by the end of January.

Barbara and I would like to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas
